The story behind the scene

Mining at Black Hill began in the 1850s and continued into the early twentieth century. Miners pursued shallow deposits, deeper leads and gold bearing quartz.

Extracting quartz was only part of the work. Batteries crushed the rock so that its gold could be recovered. Buildings and machinery became part of the mining landscape.

Mining also removed vegetation and changed the ground through excavation and waste. As activity declined, planting and public recreation became priorities. An initial lookout area was reserved in 1907.

What you’re seeing

The photograph shows the Black Hill Battery around 1900. Its buildings and industrial equipment record a processing site, rather than the later public reserve.

Why this photo matters

Gold mining needed substantial plant as well as individual labour. The battery helps explain how the worked hill produced wealth for the city beyond it.
