The Chairlift That Changed Arthurs Seat (1960)
Arthurs Seat’s open chairlift began carrying visitors in 1960. The enclosed gondolas seen today replaced it in 2016.

The story behind the scene
The chairlift added a new route up the hill, with Port Phillip opening out behind passengers as they climbed. Its open seats became a familiar part of Peninsula holidays.
The original service closed in 2006 and was later dismantled. The Arthurs Seat Eagle opened with enclosed gondolas in December 2016.
The historical photograph must date from 1960 or later, after the first chairlift opened. Its exact year has not been confirmed.
What you’re seeing
The older photograph shows passengers in open chairs above the hillside. The later photograph shows enclosed gondolas with the bay beyond. The two images were taken from different positions.
Why this photo matters
The route to the summit changed as the original machinery was replaced. The contrast between open chairs and enclosed cabins makes that change visible without suggesting the two rides were the same system.
