Melbourne’s Grand Parliament Is Still Unfinished (1856)

Melbourne’s Grand Parliament Is Still Unfinished (1856)
Parliament House looks complete from Spring Street. The dome planned above it was never built.

The story behind the scene
The parliamentary chambers were completed in 1856. The library, halls and public frontage followed in stages as the building grew.
The front facade was completed in 1888, with steps and lamps following in 1892. Those additions gave the building its familiar entrance from Spring Street.
The financial crash of the 1890s interrupted plans for the dome and further extensions. The missing dome is part of the building’s history, even though nothing in the street view marks where it was meant to be.
What you’re seeing
The older photograph shows the columns and long frontage from Spring Street. The modern view returns to the same entrance, with tram wires, road traffic and newer buildings around it.
Why this photo matters
The photographs show the parts of the scheme that were built. Knowing about the dome changes the view: the familiar roofline is the result of a plan left incomplete.
